A/V geeks and open source hackers alike are sure to fall in love with the MonolithMC HD DVR system, which runs the Linux based MythTV platform.
The system “one-ups” TiVo by waiving monthly fees and completely ignoring DRM codes that limit what shows you can save. Not only that but the Monolith is also capable of running all kinds of open-source plugins, including weather reports and jukeboxes.
The Monolith packs a dual tuner which lets you record two shows at the same time (TiVO feature as well) onto an included 200 gigabyte hard...

Well, it looks like someone cracked the DRM on TiVoToGo, making it possible to decrypt the files on non-Windows platforms. It is C code which reportedly runs on Linux, Solaris, and Windows. (I'm sure someone will port it to Mac if it doesn't run there already.) This is the Wiki reporting the development, and this is the project page on SourceForge. It is open source, BSD license. Right now it looks like a geek-level solution - you run it from the command line. But I'm sure someone will wrap it in a nice package to make it usable for the...

TiVo reported a quarterly loss Wednesday that was seven times the size of its loss a year ago, largely because of hefty legal costs associated with a high-stakes intellectual property patent dispute.
In the three months ended April 30, the company, which makes digital video recorders, lost $6.45 million, or 7 cents a share, compared with a loss of $892,000, or a penny a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 50 percent, to $59.2 million, from $39.3 million a year ago.
Analysts, on average, were expecting a loss of $10.54 million, or 14 cents a...

In a sudden twist of events, a Washington D.C. court has allowed the continued use of DISH PVRs, sold by EchoStar Communications.
"We are pleased that this morning, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. temporarily blocked an injunction issued by a Texas Court, while it considers a longer-term stay of that injunction," EchoStar said in a statement.
The ruling was the latest in an ongoing battle between TiVo, one of earlist companies to design personal video recorders, now called digital video recorders or DVRS.
"As...

ConsumerFury contends that Time Warner Cable's Raleigh division responded to a recent customer inquiry on the matter by stating that "Time Warner Cable of Raleigh does not provide support for or allow TiVo devices on our cable network...CableCARDS will only be installed on cable-ready, CableCARD-slot-available television sets." Pretty harsh, especially considering the fact that Time Warner's policy may not even be legal: federal regulations concerning CableCARDS seem to indicate that providers must support them for any unidirectional TV,...
