Using photos of oft-snapped subjects (like Notre Dame) scraped from around the Web, Photosynth (based on Seadragon technology) creates breathtaking multidimensional spaces with zoom and navigation features that outstrip all expectation. Its architect, Blaise Aguera y Arcas, shows it off in this standing-ovation demo. Curious about that speck in corner? Dive into a freefall and watch as the speck becomes a gargoyle. With an unpleasant grimace. And an ant-sized chip in its lower left molar. "Perhaps the most amazing demo I've seen this year,"...

A few days ago Microsoft released a new application aimed at keeping users up-to-date on information regarding recent changes to their systems. The not so creatively titled, "Change Analysis Diagnostic Tool" uses old System Restore data to report system modifications like newly installed programs, security updates, and even browser helper objects. It's also a great way to check for new startup items you may have not known existed. Big 'M' says it decided to publish the tool because, "As computer programs grow more complex, extensible, and...

Recall just last week when Microsoft was ordered to shell out $1.5 Billion to Alcatel-Lucent for including mp3 technology in Windows? Well, after heading back to the courts, a Judge has completely dismissed all the claims against Microsoft. This means that, barring a successful appeal, Alctatel won't be receiving a dime.

This could mean good things for the mp3 format, which seems to be contested every few years at one point or another. Alcatel, of course, plans to appeal:

Alcatel-Lucent plans to appeal the ruling and is "comfortable with...

Microsoft must pay $1.5 billion in damages to telecommunications equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent SA for violating two patents related to digital music, a federal jury ruled Thursday.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software company said the patents in question govern the conversion of audio into the digital MP3 file format on personal computers.

In 2003, Lucent Technologies Inc., which last year was acquired by Alcatel, filed 15 patent claims against Gateway Inc. and Dell Inc. In April 2003, Microsoft added itself to the list of defendants,...

I can verify that Windows Vista installation is a NIGHTMARE. The upgrade feature destroyed my computer but I finally got Vista to install and activated correctly (will detail it later).

This guy in this video obviously was as frustrated as me (but I didn't shred my copy haha)

Think of SideShow as Vista's sidekick. With the help of these mini apps that MS calls "gadgets," SideShow can let you perform small tasks like read e-mail, check on weather, look through photos, or flip through your list of contacts regardless of whether your PC is on, off, or in sleep mode.

All you need is a SideShow-enabled device—be it an external screen on your notebook or a screen on your Media Center remote.

Microsoft did an about-face yesterday, agreeing to make it easier for customers of its forthcoming Vista operating system to use outside security vendors, such as those who make popular antivirus and anti-spyware programs.

Until now, Microsoft had planned to block those companies from installing their products in the deepest levels of the new operating system, which is scheduled for release early next year.

The company said it was doing so to address the concerns of security and performance in Windows XP and apply them to Windows...
