Joining the family of iTunes plug-ins, The Filter is a free program that works like your own personal DJ by automatically creating playlists from your library and syncing them to your iPod with just a few clicks.
Selecting a few songs directs the program to analyze your picks, scan your library and generate a mood-matching mix. The time-saver will even compile data on your musical tastes to recommend new music it thinks you might like.

Jon Lech Johansen, now 22 and widely known as "DVD Jon" for his exploits, has also figured out how Apple's iPod-iTunes system works. And he's using that knowledge to start a business that is going to drive Steve Jobs crazy.
If you want to be specific - and for legal reasons, he does - Johansen has reverse-engineered FairPlay, the encryption technology Apple (Charts) uses to make the iPod a closed system. Right now, thanks to FairPlay, the songs Apple sells at its iTunes store cannot easily be played on other devices, and copy-protected...

DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. Available in dark gray, the V3i is the exact same size and weight...

Studios and online distributors see the ability to watch movies on television--as opposed to a PC screen--as a key to making legal downloads a viable business model. Until now, however, studios were wary about permitting DVD-burning of...

Sometimes, if you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself. That appears to be the case with Microsoft, which, rumor has it, is preparing its own competitor to the iPod. Tired of seeing PlaysForSure devices failing to make significant inroads against the so-far unbeatable iPod-iTunes Music Store combo, Microsoft is apparently readying its own device to take Apple on directly.
