Listen to an iPod during a storm and you may get more than electrifying tunes. A Canadian jogger suffered wishbone-shaped chest and neck burns, ruptured eardrums and a broken jaw when lightning traveled through his music player's wires.

Last summer, a Colorado teen ended up with similar injuries when lightning struck nearby as he was listening to his iPod while mowing the lawn.

Emergency physicians report treating other patients with burns from freak accidents while using personal electronic devices such as beepers, Walkman players...

The Wizpy comes with a 60GB hard drive and measures in at 8.4 x 4.2 x 1.2cm. A re-worked version of Linux acts as the primary operating system, allowing for browser, email, and office applications. Of course, there'll probably be a host of games for it too. But perhaps the most unique aspect of the Wizpy is its PC abilities. Simply plug the Wizpy into the USB port of any PC, restart the desktop machine, and It will boot into the Wizpy Linux operating system.

The Wizpy is only due out for a Japanese launch. It should start going on sale in...

DVD Jon Unlocks the iPod

Jon Lech Johansen, now 22 and widely known as "DVD Jon" for his exploits, has also figured out how Apple's iPod-iTunes system works. And he's using that knowledge to start a business that is going to drive Steve Jobs crazy.

If you want to be specific - and for legal reasons, he does - Johansen has reverse-engineered FairPlay, the encryption technology Apple (Charts) uses to make the iPod a closed system. Right now, thanks to FairPlay, the songs Apple sells at its iTunes store cannot easily be played on other devices, and copy-protected...

DVD Jon's is back!

DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.

China has directed a contract manufacturer of iPod music players to establish a union this year, Chinese media reported on Friday, after the company sued two Chinese journalists over a report accusing it of mistreating employees.

The government of the southern boomtown Shenzhen ordered the Hong Fu Jin Precision Industry (Foxconn), the Shenzhen branch of Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, to set up a union by the end of this year, the Beijing News said.

The General Workers' Union of the city had been urging the company to establish...

A chinese court has frozen the personal assets of a reporter and an editor at a Shanghai newspaper after Apple iPod manufacturer Foxconn sued the pair for 30 million yuan (US$3.77 million) for allegedly damaging its reputation over reports of substandard work conditions.

Foxconn's subsidiary in Shenzhen reportedly petitioned the city's Intermediate People's Court on July 10 to freeze the property of Wang You, a reporter for China Business News, and Weng Bao, an editor at the newspaper. The locked-up assets include apartments, a car and bank...

Zune to launch November 14th with VoIP?

The Zune should have a 30GB drive, black, brown, and cotton color options, FM tuner, 13 first party accerrories available at launch and a 50% larger screen than the iPod with video (making it 3.75-inches if you're talking diagonal, and not areal). The jucier bits, however, are that we can all expect to find out some hard information from Microsoft in August, and that the player is slated to launch on November 14th, right in time for the holiday buying season.

But the big news according to VoIP Lowdown is that it will have some sort of VoIP...

Microsoft's so-called "iPod killer" could be unveiled as early as late next month, with the company preparing to build momentum towards an October launch.

These latest developments indicate that Apple has only a short period of time to react before a barrage of marketing and publicity surrounds Microsoft's new device. To its defense, Apple told analysts in an earnings call Wednesday night that it "wasn't standing still."

Whatever other impulses are at play, iPod add-on creation is also driven by a desire to personalize the experience. And, in some cases, necessity is the mother of iPod accessory invention.
The early, runaway success of Apple Computer's iPod has spawned a whole ecosystem of third-party suppliers pushing accessories for the music player -- everything from scratch-resistant cases to colorful ear buds to high-fidelity speakers that will turn the music player into a digital boom box. Some estimates put the value of the iPod accessory market in...
