At a press conference today, the chairman of the FCC announced that Verizon won six large regional licenses for the most sought-after C-Block of spectrum that will give it a national footprint. It also won 77 smaller licenses in the B-Block. Google did not win any licenses. And AT&T won 227 small licenses, which might be good to fill in areas of coverage where it is currently weak. Satellite TV provider Echostar also won enough licenses to put together a national service,which could expand its ability to offer two-way broadband services.

The spectrum auction currently underway in the US for 90MHz of spectrum lost a major bidder when Wireless DBS LLC, a venture with the financial backing of DIRECTV and DISH Network, threw in the towel. As a result, the two satellite TV providers are out in the cold when it comes to getting a cut of the freed-up spectrum.
The bidding process itself is complicated, with carriers actually vying for 1,122 individual licenses covering different geographical areas. As a result, there may be more than one "winner," as different companies are able...

90MHz of spectrum goes on the auction block tomorrow as the FCC begins one of the largest spectrum auctions in its history. Up for grabs are licenses to the 1710-1755MHz and 2110-2155MHz bands—prime real estate for companies eager to jump into wireless services. When the auction is finally over (a process that could take weeks), the US government could be $15 billion richer, and wireless options across the country could get much more interesting.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has rejected requests by several groups, including amateur radio operators, TV broadcasters, and aeronautical companies, to severely limit or completely ban broadband services over power lines because of radio interference issues.

TiVo has communicated to both the FCC and cable operators to prep them on S3's unique ability to house two CableCARDs for dual tuning. Letter specifically states the Series3 will hit retail "soon." No mention of price.
