Apple today announced that EMI Music’s entire digital catalog of music will be available for purchase DRM-free (without digital rights management) from the iTunes Store worldwide in May. DRM-free tracks from EMI will be offered at higher quality 256 kbps AAC encoding, resulting in audio quality indistinguishable from the original recording, for US$1.29 per song, according to Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group.

In addition, iTunes customers will be able to upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher...

Engadget notes that DRM hacker 'arnezami' over at the Doom9 forums has found the "processing key" used to decrypt the DRM on all HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc films. "Let's break this down for what it is: instead of needing individual keys for each and every high-definition film -- of which there are many -- the processing key can be used to unlock, decrypt, and backup every HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc film released so far." The war on keeping pirated HD content out of the hands of broadband users isn't going very well so far -- the only thing holding...

Well, it looks like someone cracked the DRM on TiVoToGo, making it possible to decrypt the files on non-Windows platforms. It is C code which reportedly runs on Linux, Solaris, and Windows. (I'm sure someone will port it to Mac if it doesn't run there already.) This is the Wiki reporting the development, and this is the project page on SourceForge. It is open source, BSD license. Right now it looks like a geek-level solution - you run it from the command line. But I'm sure someone will wrap it in a nice package to make it usable for the...

The anti-tech-powerexec is known for founding MP3.com, Lindows / Linspire, Skype competitor SIPphone, and DRM-free online music sales biz MP3tunes, not to mention former employer of DRM freedom fighter Jon Johansen -- so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that after the ruckus being raised around the Zune's crippled WiFi and worthless DRM system that he stepped in to take a potshot.
Now if you're thinking that zune sounds familiar it's because the press has been abuzz about an upcoming MP3 player from Microsoft called Zune. At first...

DVD Jon's is back!

DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.
