David Carey estimates that the cost of the materials used in the iPhone add up to about $200 for the 4-gigabyte version, which sells for $499 and about $220 for the 8-gigabyte version, which sells for $599.
The most expensive component on the phone, Carey says, is the touch screen, for which Apple tapped a little-known German concern called Balda. Another big winner is Samsung, which supplied the main microprocessor chip. It was stamped with an Apple logo, but with a serial number that matches closely a chip that Samsung sells. Samsung also...

Did Apple actually reduce the size of the device since January or are they just trying to make it seem smaller? Maybe people were complaining about the size?

DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.

During the same Goldman Sachs conference during which he announced first-week sales of Disney movies through iTunes, CEO Bob Iger revealed that he has seen Apple's upcoming iTV device in action and that it has a hard drive, a feature that many assumed would be missing. He said: "It can also stream it live through the box to the TV or it has a small hard drive on it so they can download what you put on the device on your computer, on your iTunes, through the television set."
Describing the device in response to an analyst's question, Mr....

Steve Jobs announced ten new features for Leopard, the next version of OS X, most of which will seem more than vaguely familiar to Windows users...
64-bit application support
Thanks to the 64-bit Xeon chip that will be shipping in the new Mac Pro systems, Leopard will be fully 64-bit enabled (unlike Tiger, which is only partially 64-bit and then only on certain Power PC systems). That means that OS X will finally do what Windows XP x64 Edition did last year: Run 32-bit and 64-bit applications natively, side-by-side. Good for them.
Time...

Whatever other impulses are at play, iPod add-on creation is also driven by a desire to personalize the experience. And, in some cases, necessity is the mother of iPod accessory invention.
The early, runaway success of Apple Computer's iPod has spawned a whole ecosystem of third-party suppliers pushing accessories for the music player -- everything from scratch-resistant cases to colorful ear buds to high-fidelity speakers that will turn the music player into a digital boom box. Some estimates put the value of the iPod accessory market in...

Sometimes, if you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself. That appears to be the case with Microsoft, which, rumor has it, is preparing its own competitor to the iPod. Tired of seeing PlaysForSure devices failing to make significant inroads against the so-far unbeatable iPod-iTunes Music Store combo, Microsoft is apparently readying its own device to take Apple on directly.
