Will Processors Get Cheaper?

After attending an Intel propaganda conference in Concord today, I couldn't help but be amazed by the number of fabrication plants the company owns. It's no secret that superior manufacturing has been the chip maker's key stepping stone in out pacing AMD in both efficiency and power consumption. Later this year Intel even plans to make the jump from 65nm to 45nm construction, a move that will help pave the way for affordable quad core processors to hit the stores this fall.

You see, as Intel begins to make the innards of their processors smaller and smaller, they'll no doubt be able to fit more and more of them on a single wafer. Naturally, more chips made in fewer steps should translate into cheaper production costs. Cheaper production means cheaper processors, which ultimately lends itself cheaper PC's. Who knows, we could be seeing budget quad cores by this time next year!

I have no doubt about the quad-cores, but what about the software support?

Hard to tell from the demonstration. Intel's claiming more and more games and applications are supporting multi-core processors all the time. But I never heard any real numbers.
