Robot Worn On Your Body Can Increase Your Strength

An exoskeleton that can be worn by a human is a new type of robot under development at Tsukuba University. It's called Hybrid Assistive Limb, HAL for short, and anyone who wears it has potential to lift up to 10-times the weight they normally could.

“It depends on his original power, because this robot suit is controlled by the assist ratio,” says Yoshiyuki Sankai of Tsukuba University. “Usually we set it at 50% or 60% or 70%. If he is a very weak person we set the assist ratio at 90%, so at that time you say 10 times.”

HAL works by figuring out what the wearer's muscle are doing. The suit then simply reacts.

“The command signals from the brain are transmitted to the muscles through the motor neurons, and we can detect such faint bio-electrical signals on the surface of the skin, and these signals are calibrated into the computer here, and after that this computer controls these power units so he can move or upgrade his power,” says Sankai.

Developers expect when the suit becomes commercially available - they hope within the next few years - it'll likely cost somewhere around $20,000.

Hi there,to u people in the far east,to Professor Sankai esq.,to the manufactures at Cyberdyne inc.I write: I think it's of no avail that I always keep on writing to u trying to buy and get the HAL3 for my weak leg and the rest of my build.looks like (unfortunately) your markets of interest are in Europe and the USA.I've always thought that I might restart a physically normal life by importing the HAL3 to Amman. My build is'nt humble to a big extent. The HAL3 needs maintenance time after time and people shorter and (less weight) than myself.I've sent to u 5 letters by Air mail.Did u receive them?
I have to adapt and get used to my present handicapped situation.I have to adapt.Walking properly again is a dream very very far.I'm 47 years old and has been handicapped for 2 years and 5 months. sincerely Yasser Kurdi

Yasser Kurdi,Amman,Jordan. I've got used to my handicapped situation now.I remember,in the beginning I did a lot-a lot-of crying.I also say with regret ,I've
used my previous mechanical left leg's cast in a harsh unhealthy manner while walking and pressing hard on it while I was angry.I'm tall, but now thinner. How can a man like me,who lives in the Middle East, buy and import and get the HAL3?
