DirecTV and EchoStar talking merger again?

Are we settling in for a season of merger mania? Over the past several days, speculation has underway that US satellite TV providers DIRECTV and Echostar, which owns DISH Network, would be hooking up. The two companies tried to get together in 2002, but US government regulators rejected the deal over antitrust concerns.

News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch believes things can be different this time, and says the deal would probably stand up to government scrutiny this time around. "I think it would be much harder for the government to turn it down," said Murdoch, asserting that the television landscape has changed markedly in the last four years.
