DIRECTV and DISH drop out of spectrum auction
The spectrum auction currently underway in the US for 90MHz of spectrum lost a major bidder when Wireless DBS LLC, a venture with the financial backing of DIRECTV and DISH Network, threw in the towel. As a result, the two satellite TV providers are out in the cold when it comes to getting a cut of the freed-up spectrum.
The bidding process itself is complicated, with carriers actually vying for 1,122 individual licenses covering different geographical areas. As a result, there may be more than one "winner," as different companies are able to target their bids to cover geographies they are particularly interested in. The bidding has reached $10.3 billion so far—in line with preauction estimates of $8 billion-15 billion—and could go on for several more weeks.
